The Wall Street Bombing

Wall Street in the aftermath of the 1920 bombing.

Wall Street today.

Stock prices on Wall Street have bombed several times, but has Wall Street ever truly been bombed? The answer - quite shockingly - is yes.

At 23 Wall Street in New York's Financial District sat the headquarters of J.P. Morgan Bank, a.k.a. "The Corner". At this point in time J.P. Morgan was not exactly the most well-liked guy. Many people were angry that Morgan had seemingly gotten rich off of World War I, so a terrorist bombing wouldn't have been the most surprising thing.

At 12:01 P.M. on September 16, 1920 100 pounds of dynamite and 500 pounds of cast-iron sash weights in a horse-drawn wagon exploded outside 23 Wall Street, horse and all. To prevent a panic president of the New York Stock Exchange William H. Remick suspended trade for the day. Rescuers rushed to bring the wounded to the hospital. One such rescuer, a 17-year-old messenger named James Saul, drove a car and transported 30 people to the hospital.

The blast killed 38 people and injured over one hundred more. While some have suspected Bolsheviks, anarchists, communists, or militant socialists may have been responsible, no one truly knows who did this act of terror.
